Why the ends are sealed, not hemmed
A hem adds a ridge, and a ridge is the thing your fingers keep finding. Heat-sealing leaves the edge continuous, which is the whole point of the object.

The ribbon shown on the front page is generated from a script at real dimensions, so 18 inches in the file is 18 inches in the hand.
